Information

Immersion chiller in stainless steel: from 80 to 30 degrees in fifteen minutes

Cooling is the most vulnerable point in the whole brew. Between 60 and 30 degrees the wort is a perfect growth medium, and if it sits cooling on its own for hours, it is not the yeast that gets the head start. This stainless steel coil drops straight into the hot liquid and takes it from 80 to 30 degrees in around fifteen minutes.

Stainless steel
80 to 30 degrees in ~15 min
10 mm hose fitting
Easy to keep clean

The principle is as simple as it is effective. Cold water goes in one end, through the coil and out to the drain, and the heat from the liquid leaves with it. The coil is shaped so the cooling is even throughout the vessel. Stainless steel means it can be cleaned properly, and that is exactly what decides whether a chiller lasts for years.

Pro tip!
Stir the liquid gently while the chiller sits in it. Without movement a layer of cooled liquid forms around the coil and insulates it from the rest of the vessel, doubling the cooling time. And do not waste the warmed water coming out, it is ideal for rinsing equipment and washing up while you wait.

Features

  • Rapid cooling: From 80 to 30 degrees in about 15 minutes instead of several hours.
  • Stainless steel: Easy to clean and sanitise, and built to last for years.
  • Even cooling: The coil shape spreads the cooling through the whole vessel, not just the base.
  • Versatile: Works on wort, mash and other liquids that need the temperature down fast.

How to use

  1. Lower the chiller into the hot liquid.
  2. Fit a 10 mm hose to both ends of the chiller.
  3. Connect one end to cold water and lead the other to the drain.
  4. Check that the hoses are secure and open the cold water.
  5. Watch the temperature until the liquid reaches the level you want.

FAQ Frequently asked questions

How fast does it actually cool?

Around fifteen minutes from 80 to 30 degrees under normal conditions. The real speed depends on how cold your tap water is, how much liquid you have, and whether you stir while it runs.

Does it need sanitising?

Yes. The coil sits submerged in the wort after the boil, which is after everything else is sterile. Drop it in for the last ten minutes of the boil and it sanitises itself in the hot liquid.

Why does fast cooling matter so much?

Because the gap between boil and fermentation is the one window where bacteria and wild yeast can establish themselves unopposed. The shorter that window, the cleaner the finished flavour.

Can it be used for anything besides beer?

Yes. It works on any hot liquid that needs the temperature down quickly, such as mash before enzymes or yeast go in, or large batches of stock.
