Hunting Knife Outdoor Edge SwingBlade Black: Two Knives in One, One Motion Apart

The SwingBlade from American Outdoor Edge solves a classic problem in the field: you need both a skinning blade and a gutting blade, but do not want to carry two knives. Here the blade rotates 180 degrees inside the handle, from a 9.0 cm drop point skinner to an 8.1 cm gutting blade, locking securely in both positions. The gutting blade opens the animal like a zipper, without puncturing organs and without cutting hair that contaminates the meat.

Skinning and gutting blade in one knife
Aichi AUS-8 stainless steel, 57-58 HRC
Non-slip rubberized TPR grip
Nylon belt sheath included

The blade steel is Japanese Aichi AUS-8, a stainless steel at 57-58 HRC that holds a good edge and is still easy to resharpen at home. The rubberized TPR handle gives a secure grip even with wet or cold hands, and reduces hand fatigue when a whole animal needs skinning. At 21.1 cm overall and 205 g it is big enough for moose and deer, yet handy enough to ride in the belt sheath through the whole hunt.

Pro tip for gutting!
Start at the breastbone: slip the gutting blade under the skin with the hook facing up, and pull calmly and evenly towards the pelvis. Let the blade do the work without pressing down, then it glides over the organs instead of into them. Clean cuts without hair and stomach content are the simplest quality upgrade you can give the meat.

Features

  • 2-in-1 function: The blade rotates 180 degrees between a drop point skinner (9.0 cm) and a gutting blade (8.1 cm), locking in both positions.
  • Quality steel: Aichi AUS-8 stainless steel at 57-58 HRC, holds its edge well and is easy to maintain.
  • Secure grip: Rubberized TPR handle that stays put in wet and cold weather, with a nylon belt sheath included.

How to use

  1. Use the gutting blade to open the animal from breastbone to pelvis, hook facing up, with an even pull.
  2. Press the lock and swing the blade around to the skinner, then skin and break down with the drop point edge.
  3. Wash the knife by hand after use, rinse and dry the pivot well, and apply a thin coat of oil before it goes back in the sheath.

FAQ Frequently asked questions

How does the SwingBlade mechanism work?

You press the lock button and swing the blade 180 degrees around inside the handle, where it locks automatically in the new position. The change takes seconds and can be done with gloves on. The blade is locked equally solidly in both positions, so the knife behaves like a fixed blade in use.

What is the advantage of a dedicated gutting blade?

The gutting blade has a blunt hook that lifts the skin while the edge cuts from the inside out. That way you open the animal without puncturing the stomach or organs, and without cutting hair that settles on the meat. With a regular knife point the same job takes far more care, especially in the dark or the rain.

How do I maintain and sharpen the knife?

Wash by hand in hot soapy water after use, rinse the pivot clean of blood and hair, dry well and put a thin coat of oil on the joint. The AUS-8 steel is grateful to sharpen: a few passes on a stone or a round in a knife sharpener before each hunt keeps the edge razor sharp, and a sharp knife is both safer and more precise than a dull one.
