Information

Ground Star Anise - The Mystique of the East and Holiday Comfort

Star anise (Illicium verum) is known for its beautiful star shape, but the magic truly lies in the flavor. The ground version gives you that intense, sweet, and licorice-like taste immediately, without having to crush hard pods. This is the spice that adds depth to everything from mulled wine and gingerbread to classic Vietnamese soups (Pho) and Chinese marinades for duck and pork.

✔ Flavorful licorice aroma
✔ Ready to use
✔ For baking & desserts
✔ Asian favorite
Tip: Ground star anise is much more potent than regular anise seeds. A small pinch is often enough to elevate an entire stew or cake batter. Try a little in jam (especially plum or pear) for a sophisticated twist!

Applications

  • Holiday Baking: A must in gingerbread, spice cake, and honey cake.
  • Asian Cuisine: Main ingredient in "Chinese Five Spice" and indispensable in Pho soup and teriyaki sauce.
  • Drinks: Provides the characteristic flavor for mulled wine (gløgg), chai tea, and hot toddies.
  • Meat: Pairs surprisingly well with fatty meats like duck, pork belly, and pork neck.

FAQ

Is it the same as anise seed?
No, although both taste like licorice (due to the compound anethole), they are from two completely different plants. Star anise is much more potent, "woodier," and sharper in flavor than regular anise.
Can it be used in marinades?
Absolutely. Ground star anise is perfect in a dry rub for meat or stirred into soy sauce and honey for a lovely marinade for chicken or pork.
How much equals a whole star?
One whole star anise corresponds to roughly half a teaspoon of ground powder. Remember that the powder releases flavor faster than the whole star.
