Binchotan is so hard that it rings like porcelain when you strike two pieces together. This hardness means it requires some effort to light (we recommend a gas torch or electric lighter), but once it gets going, it delivers steady, intense infrared radiant heat for hours. This makes it perfect for grilling thin slices of meat (Yakitori) quickly and precisely directly at the table without smoking out your guests.
Allow plenty of time for lighting (preferably 30-45 minutes). Do not use lighter fluid! To extinguish the charcoal after use, place it in an airtight container or submerge it quickly in water and dry it. You can then reuse it next time, making it very economical in the long run.

Why is it so hard to light?
Due to the extreme density and high carbon content. Use an electric lighter (Looftlighter) or a chimney starter with briquettes at the bottom.
Can I use it in a regular grill?
Yes, but be aware of the high heat. Feel free to mix a few pieces of Binchotan with regular charcoal to extend the burn time and increase the heat in your Kamado.
