Primo Cast Iron Charcoal Grate for Oval LG 300: The Spare Part That Restores the Draft

Does the Oval LG 300 take longer to come up to temperature than it used to, or respond poorly when you adjust the vents? Then the charcoal grate is often the culprit. The grate sits at the bottom of the firebox with the embers directly on it, and after some seasons even heavy cast iron can crack or warp. This original spare part from Primo puts the air system back in order: the charcoal is lifted so the draft reaches the embers from below, and ash falls freely into the ash chamber.

Made for the Oval LG 300

Everything in a kamado is governed by the airflow from the bottom vent up through the charcoal, and the charcoal grate is the foundation of that system. An intact grate gives even embers across the whole base, fast lighting and a grill that obeys the vents precisely, whether you are holding 110 degrees with a smoking cut or running full heat with a pizza stone. Since this is the original part from Primo, it sits correctly in the LG 300 firebox without adjustment, and the swap takes a moment with no tools.

Pro tip for the kamado!
Make the ash check a fixed routine: empty the ash chamber and stir the coals gently before every long session. Open airways from the start give faster lighting, a more even temperature and lower charcoal consumption through the whole cook.

Features

  • Heavy cast iron: Sits directly in the embers without losing its shape, season after season.
  • Restores the draft: The charcoal is lifted off the base so air reaches the embers, and ash falls unobstructed through the grate.
  • Original fit: Primo's own part for the Oval LG 300, sits correctly in the firebox without adjustment.
  • Tool-free swap: Lift out the old grate and set the new one in place in under a minute.

How to use

  1. Let the grill cool down completely, and empty out charcoal and ash.
  2. Lift the old charcoal grate out of the firebox.
  3. Set the new grate in place at the bottom of the firebox.
  4. Fill with charcoal and light as normal, and empty the ash chamber regularly for the best draft.

FAQ Frequently asked questions

How often does the charcoal grate need replacing?

There is no fixed interval, the grate is replaced when it cracks, loses pieces or warps. Cast iron sitting directly in the embers is a natural wear part, and how long it lasts depends on how often and how hot you grill. Check the grate whenever you empty the ash anyway.

Does the grate fit my grill?

This grate is made for the Primo Oval LG 300, and the grill uses one grate. If you have the Oval XL 400, the matching original charcoal grate in XL size is also available at Foodstuff.

Is a little rust on the grate a problem?

No, some surface rust on cast iron is completely normal and burns off at the next firing. Keep the grill dry between sessions with the lid closed and empty the ash regularly, and you keep the rust in check and the grate lasts longer.
