Information

Dried basil: sweet, peppery herb for tomato sauce, pizza and pasta

Basil is the herb that makes tomato sauce taste Italian. The flavour is sweet and peppery, with a faint note of clove. Dried basil has a deeper, more concentrated flavour than fresh, and it handles cooking. That makes it the right choice where fresh basil falls short: in sauces that simmer, in meatballs and in sausage meat.

100% dried basil
Holds up in cooked sauces
1 tsp dried = 1 tbsp fresh
For pizza, pasta and sausage

Basil and oregano are the base flavour of a classic pizza sauce. A teaspoon of each in 400 grams of canned tomatoes makes sauce for four pizzas. The herb also suits lasagne, minestrone, meatballs and Italian sausage, as well as eggs, chicken and fish. It pairs well with garlic, olive oil, tomato and mozzarella.

Pro tip!
Add dried basil early, or let it sizzle for a couple of minutes in the olive oil before the tomatoes go in. The flavour then moves into the fat and spreads through the whole sauce. Fresh basil is the opposite: it goes in right at the end.

Features

  • Concentrated flavour: 1 teaspoon dried equals 1 tablespoon of fresh, chopped basil.
  • Holds up in cooking: Gives flavour throughout the cooking time in sauces and stews.
  • Classic Italian: The base flavour in pizza sauce, lasagne and pasta sauce.
  • Good in sausage meat: Suits meatballs and Italian sausage.
  • Pure product: Only dried basil, with no additives.

How to use

  1. Rub the herb lightly between your fingers before adding it, which releases the aromatic oils.
  2. In tomato sauce and stews: add the basil early, ideally to the oil together with the garlic.
  3. Let the sauce simmer for at least 10 minutes so the herb has time to release its flavour.
  4. In sausage meat: mix the herb in with the salt and other spices before shaping or stuffing.
  5. Taste and add a little more basil towards the end of cooking if you want more.

FAQ Frequently asked questions

How much dried basil equals fresh?

1 teaspoon of dried basil equals 1 tablespoon of fresh, chopped basil. The dried herb is more concentrated, so you need about a third of the amount.

When should dried basil go into the food?

Early. Add it at the start of cooking, or let it sizzle for a couple of minutes in the oil before the liquid goes in. Fresh basil, on the other hand, goes in right at the end.

How much basil in pizza sauce?

1 teaspoon of dried basil, ideally with 1 teaspoon of oregano, to 400 grams of canned tomatoes. That makes enough sauce for four pizzas.

Can I use basil in sausage?

Yes. Basil belongs in Italian sausage together with fennel and oregano. Use around 1.5 teaspoons of dried basil per kilo of meat.
