Information

Cotton cheesecloth 40 x 40 cm: the fine filtration

The cotton cloth is what you reach for when the curd is soft. It strains finer than a plastic cloth, and that decides whether the fresh curd stays in the cloth or runs through into the bowl below. The same two cloths do just as well when churning butter, straining homemade juice or clarifying stock.

Pure cotton
Fine filtration of soft curd
Machine wash at 60 degrees
2 cloths per pack

The cloths measure 40 x 40 cm, with a tolerance of plus or minus 15 percent, and they take both a 60 degree machine wash and ironing. Cotton absorbs moisture, so always hang them to dry after washing rather than folding them into a drawer while still damp.

Pro tip!
Always rinse the cloth in cold water before washing it hot. Hot water coagulates the milk proteins and sets them into the weave, leaving the cloth stiff and filtering worse each time. Cold water first, then the machine, and the cloth lasts for years.

Features

  • Pure cotton: A natural material that filters finer than a plastic cloth on soft curd.
  • Versatile: Works for cheese, yoghurt, butter churning, juice and clarifying stock.
  • Machine washable: Takes 60 degrees and ironing, and can be reused many times.
  • Two per pack: One in use and one clean, so you never wait for a cloth to dry.

How to use

  1. Wash the cloth before first use.
  2. Lay the cloth in a strainer over a bowl, or line the mould with it.
  3. Pour the curd into the cloth and let the liquid drain.
  4. Tie the corners and hang it up if you want a firmer result.
  5. Rinse in cold water right after use, machine wash at 60 degrees and hang to dry.

FAQ Frequently asked questions

Cotton or plastic cloth, which should I choose?

Cotton filters finer and is best on soft curd such as yoghurt and fresh cheese. A plastic cloth releases the cheese more easily and dries faster, and is better when the cheese will be pressed.

Does the cloth need washing before first use?

Yes. Wash it once before use to remove production residue, and rinse it in cold water after each make before it goes in the machine.

Why has my cloth gone stiff?

Because milk proteins have set into the weave. That happens when the cloth is rinsed in hot water or set aside without rinsing. Boil it in water with a little baking soda to loosen what has fixed itself.

Can I use it for anything besides cheese?

Yes. It is just as useful for straining yoghurt into labneh, churning butter, clarifying stock and pressing juice from berries.
